'American Idol' Alum Jax Talks New EP 'Funny'

Nothing about American Idol season 14 alum Jax's 2016 was funny. Shortly after releasing the reality show bashing single "La La Land," the East Brunswick, N.J., singer was poised to take her career to the next level, but was dealt a crushing blow when she was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease and thyroid cancer, taking her life in an alternate direction as she underwent treatments to fight the disease.

Fast forward to 2017, and the pop singer is surging forward with the release of her new six-song EP, ironically titled Funny. The title track, she says, is "sarcastic in its own weird way."

"It's not that funny, trust me," Jax tells Billboard of her journey.

Exclusive: ‘American Idol’ Star Jax Premieres New ‘Funny’ EP, Live Video

Life hasn’t always been very funny for pop-rock singer-songwriter Jax. After an emotional run on Season 14 of American Idol (chronicled in her scathing kiss-off single “La La Land,” which has absolutely nothing to do with the Oscar-bait film of the same name), the 20-year-old found out that she was suffering from both Hashimoto’s disease and thyroid cancer. She underwent surgery to remove multiple malignant tumors near her vocals cords, and she had to relearn how to sing. But Jax is a survivor (incredibly, she even trained for her first marathon while recovering from her illness), and now she’s having the last laugh, so to speak, with her optimistically titled EP Funny, premiering today on Yahoo Music in conjunction with her live music video.

'American Idol' Alums James Durbin & Casey Abrams Team Up

American Idol season 10 alums James Durbin and Casey Abrams have teamed up on a new Lego-inspired stop-motion video for Durbin's new song “Scratchers N’ Cheap Beer" from his EP Riot on Sunset.

As Durbin wails the lyrics, "I do it for the love/I do it for the high/I do it for the noise/I do it for the fight," the visuals are something to behold, as both Idols rock out in Lego form and other figures join in a mosh pit. "Scratches N' Cheap Beer" is the latest release from Durbin's 2016 album, Riot on Sunset, which also features the single "Smackdown."
